I posted this last year, but I’m finding as we’re back in Summertime again, many are doing things to improve their health either because of illness, or to prevent it. Either way, you need to have correct info on this because the food that’s sold in the US has some creative labeling methods that can be deceiving. There are many misconceptions about what constitutes good nutrition It’s amazing the misinformation that is put out about what makes for good nutrition. The fact is, there are a lot of companies with big advertising budgets to imply that there is research showing what they are selling is what the research says you need. Although I too represent a company that provides a nutritional resource, the research I will direct you to is top notch and indisputable. What I do is educate people from highly credible medical and nutritional resources I’ve learned from and make available to you. This research has been peer reviewed by professionals in the field that the research was done and published in the respective professional journals.

Anyway, I’m getting ahead of myself. When it comes to good nutrition it’s really not that complicated.

Rule 1, processed food is bad. Most anything that comes out of a box has little to no nutritional value except for a few exceptions. These exceptions become clear by reading the ingredients. If a good portion of the ingredients is sugar, enriched flour, high fructose corn syrup, partially hydrogenated oils and or an artificial sweetener like aspartame or similar. It’s best to avoid. None of those ingredients have any nutrition and are harmful to eat over a long period of time.

Rule 2, the best parts of the store to shop in are the produce department, the fish department, the meat department. a few items in the cereal isle and a couple items in isles that have little processed products. In that order. The more you eat that comes closest to it’s original state from nature, the more nutrition it has. If it has a lot of ingredients you can’t easily pronounce, probably not good to eat those either.

You may notice I did not mention the dairy department. In reality, no dairy is required for human nutritional needs. For treats? Sure on occasion. On the other hand, often healthy dairy substitutes like soy, almond or rice milk products are sometimes the dairy section. Also farm raised eggs are ok as well.

Rule 3, Hydration, water is of course important to consume everyday. However anything other than water should not be considered for hydration. An exception is high water content produce. Especially now during the Summer, melon, especially watermelon should be consumed in large quantities during this time of year. Reason being the water content is high and the nutrients that nature provides with it enhances the utilization of it’s hydration. Unfortunately many consider the sports or performance drinks as hydration and they certainly promote and package themselves as such, they certainly are not. As I said, the closer to nature is the best. None of those products can be found in nature. In spite of their labeling there is little of anything natural about them. Natural ingredients? Yes but are similar to say orange juice from concentrate with calcium added. The orange juice is pasteurized, then concentrated and reconstituted with synthetic calcium added. Hmm, Natural? I think not. Originated from, but not what you’re actually buying and putting in your body.

Also, if you don’t have a water filter at home, I recommend getting one. Yes if your faucet delivers water from a treatment plant, you need a water filter. Bottled water is a good alternative but more expensive in the long run. Many are really not sure how much water they should consume daily. X amount of glasses a day is not reality because you wouldn’t expect someone that is 6.5′ the same requirement as someone who is 5′. So you go by weight. Take your body weight and divide by two. Some think that sounds like a lot. It is if you’re not accustomed to proper hydration.

Anyway, I’ve given some basics in this posting, but I welcome your questions and comments. Please feel free to share this with your friends and relatives since although some of what will be recommended here will sound difficult if not impossible to achieve in your busy lifestyle, I’ll provide ways to make it easier.

In talking about Fit vs. Healthy. it’s really pretty simple. You can be fit, but being healthy requires good nutrition to go with your fitness plan. Without it you’re tearing your body down leading to injuries and possible degenerative disease. Our bodies require regular physical exercise but that exercise does cause damage to cell structures if not offset by good nutrition to counteract the effects. Some feel if they exercise a lot and intensely they can eat anything they want. That is a mistake, especially within the first hour after an exercise routine. The body wants the best nutrition possible during that time for the maintenance needed, also known as recovery. Recovery drinks are not the answer. Real food like fruits and vegetables or certain well formulated nutrition products which I will share upon request..

Hope you found this helpful..

To assist with your raw produce intake. Many have heard of and possibly used Juice Plus and got away from it for different reasons. There is nothing else on the plant that compares to this, and the only product that has top notch scientific research to back up it’s ability to provide what the body needs for healing and maintenance. Please contact me for more information. rick@rickfigley.com or 954-649-5896 to learn more or visit my Juice Plus+ website www.rickshowsjuiceplus.com

I posted this last year at this time, but felt it was worth repeating.

It’s really hot out there. But what else is new for summer time. Here down in South Florida it’s not only the heat, but the humidity making it difficult to stand outside for more than 5 minutes without starting to sweat. Unless you’re in a shaded breeze, then maybe 10 minutes:)

In any case hydration is extremely important. Unfortunately hydrating is difficult for those who don’t like to drink water, which is for the most part the BEST hydration. Notice I said, “for the most part”? Research done at University of Aberdeen Medical School http://www.impactlab.com/2009/07/19/some-fruit-and-vegetables-can-hydrate-you-more-than-a-glass-of-water/ shows that some fruits and vegetables contain the ultimate mix of minerals, salts sugar and amino acids to more effectively hydrate than just water or even sports drinks. The key is fruits and vegetables are from nature, sports drinks are not.

As for water it is often said that say 8 of 8 oz glasses of water each day is what you need. The problem with that is you need a certain amount depending on your body size. So the rule of thumb is take your body weight and divide it by 2. That is the number of ounces of “water” you should consume everyday. I specify water because no other beverage should be considered for strictly hydration. I’ve had some ask me about milk. Absolutely not. In fact even though you drink milk like a beverage, chemically it’s a food and should not be thought of as hydration. Of course coffee can not since that will actually dehydrate you, as will sodas. I often hear or read about how good a cold one. Too bad they mean beer instead of water.

Something that a lot of people also do not realize with regard to hydration is certain health issues being caused or at least related to insufficient daily hydration. Since our body is mostly water, lack of sufficient hydration can cause a multitude of health issues. So with more adequate hydration, you may be able to greatly reduce some health issues you’re dealing with and not just some obvious ones like constipation.

Would love to hear your comments.

In any case, doing so now. But for the many of you who are follow this, you’ll be interested in checking out my new page and blog focusing on Karate, and fitness. www.namastekarate.com There may be times that I’ll overlap posts between the two or just link to them. In any case if you like what you’ve been seeing here, you’ll probably like as well. At my Namaste Karate blog I speak of fitness for children and adults alike. Having trained in Karate for several years and taught children and adults alike in 4.5 of those years I’ve come to realize this approach to be unique as I combine diciplines that I could not teach where I was so decided to start this. As always, I want your feedback. Also if your on Facebook join my page at Namaste Karate Page .

Been a long time, actaully way too long since I’ve posted last. Will be doing so more frequently. Have an announcement though, I’ve started another blog at www.namastekarate.com . It’s a blog but also my new website to inform and promote an endeavor I’ve been planning for some months now. Been teaching karate for over 4.5 years at the school I trained at since a white belt and realized what I could teach there was limited, in that I have other important aspects of martial arts to teach, some apply directly to martial arts, some do not, but all applies to making one’s life better. Go to that site for more info. I’ve also created a FB fan page http://www.facebook.com/?ref=home#!/pages/Pembroke-Pines-FL/Namaste-om-Karate/118400424873219?ref=sgm&__a=11&ajaxpipe=1
. Will give more on that here later.

On to the subject. I recently learned of a couple of friends planning, or considering surgery for one thing or another. Most people realize that is a last resort for ANY condition and that is a good thing. Some however if they have a lot of faith in their doctor and the doctor recommends surgery, they don’t give it a socond thought, but they should. First, nothing against the doctor, they’re doing what they’ve been trained to do and often don’t have time to actaully keep up with what is going on and available that would be more beneficial to their patients. This is a shame because it unfortuantly makes them quite ignorant. Often times the patient will do the research and learn things they actually point out to their doctor. If your doctor is good and you do this, he or she will be grateful for your advising them. Some doctors have an issue with a patient doing this and personally I’d have an issue with a doctor who does.

In any case, one of the important considerations with surgery is, is anything being cut out, either entirely or partially? The problem with any part of the human body being “Cut out” reduces not only that part’s ability to do what it’s supposed to for your body, but may reduce it’s ability to heal naturally. Many organs in the past, such as tonsils and appendixes were considered to not have a function. That was mostly because scientists could not figure out what they did. They assumed we had evolved past the need for them, kind of silly, if that was so, why did we still have them? However both do have important functions. Sometimes though the surgery is on joints where possibly some cleaning of calcium deposits or other “Adjustments” are done. This although seemingly harmless can cause problems in that it’s done intrusively instead of giving what the body needs to repair itself. Believe it or not, most health problems, other than lack of proper nutrition, come from dehydration. Even joint problems. Joints need lubrication and the body needs to provide for that much of that coming from water. We should all be getting half our body weight in ounces in water everyday. Other good sources of hydration other than water, especially during the summer are melon, and cucumbers. These not only have a high water content but contain nutrients that provide better utilization of the hydration they provide.

The only time that is really the most appropriate to get surgery is if you’re in a life threatening accident. And then you’d want the least invasive sergeion you can get, but most all surgery for correcting illness can be avoided with a healthy lifestyle.

I recently added a new resource to my resource links on this nutrition and wellness blog. I’ve actually known of him for a long time. I first learned of him and the nutrition he teaches about almost 30 years ago when I heard him him talk of his book, “The McDougall Plan”. He spoke of a starch/plant based diet that he referred to as a “Health Supporting Diet”. When I say diet, I mean daily nutrition intake, not a diet to loose weight. He spoke of seeing patients in his office located in Hawaii from many different cultures and their daily food intake. He discovered that as a whole, those who ate the least amount of food from animals sources, the healthier they were in general. They had much less, if any occurrence of the degenerative diseases many Americans get like heart disease, cancer, hypertension…you know what I mean. Hearing this information and reading his book essentially turned me into a vegan. At least for number of years, which gave me a good perspective of understanding my body and it’s dietary needs.

Take a look at his website and his information. One thing he advocates against and always has is taking vitamins. Though I went along with that for a while I felt that eating the food we eat, even lots of produce, was lacking in nutrients, which it is, but vitamins I learned later to not correct for that. In the last decade I became more aware of the need for whole food nutrition thta vitamins do not assist with. That’s when I began to understand about Juice Plus+ and in fact that DOES, fill the nutrition gap. That’s when I started using it and recommending it to others.

Anyway as I said. Take a look at Dr. McDougall’s website http://www.drmcdougall.com here or from the right column of this page.

Here is another addition to the topic of inoculation dangers as it relates to Autism. This is from an email newsletter I subscribe to from Dr. Pam Popper of “The Wellness Forum” and recommend all my readers subscribe to it. Though I provide a link to it and subscription on the right column of this page, here it is again. http://www.wellnessforum.com/Forms/SubscribeNewsletterForm here’s a link to this article http://www.wellnessforum.com/NewsStand/, which is one of several for this particular issue. http://www.wellnessforum.com/NewsStand/ March 29, 2010, Volume 8 Issue 13.

The article is below. This article is of particular interest to me because I have a friend, Lori Ortiz, who’s son got Autism after an inoculation. She, began looking for natural solutions instead of “medical” ones for her son Austin’s condition, especially since the medical profession has no real solution that would really be acceptable to any parent. Go to her site and share with any other parents you may know in this situation.

http://www.familywellnesscoaching.com

Here is Dr. Poppers article:

Dear Dr. Pam: I have heard a lot of news lately that the theory that vaccinations cause autism has been totally discredited. Is this true?

I have spent considerable time researching this issue myself, and I am convinced that there is a connection between vaccinations and autism. However, vaccinations are not the only cause of autism and the link between thimerosal and autism is not clear. Thimerosal is a preservative that was used in almost all childhood vaccinations until a few years ago, and is still used in many vaccines, including flu vaccines, today. Many of the lawsuits alleging harm from vaccinations have focused on this connection, and I think this strategy is misdirected. This does not mean that I am not concerned about thimerosal, but rather that I think that a cause and effect relationship between thimerosal alone and autism has not been established.

The effort to discredit vaccines as a cause of autism has been going on for decades. In my opinion, the recent stepped-up push to do so is due to the public’s growing suspicion and rejection of vaccines. In spite of a national campaign mounted by health authorities to scare people about the dangers of the H1N1 virus, most of the public opted not to get vaccinated. According to an article in the Columbus Dispatch on Monday, March 22, only 42% of the vaccines distributed to Ohio from the federal government were actually administered. The article stated that 9800 unused doses of vaccine were stored at the Summit County Health Department alone.

Thankfully, we live in an information age, and more and more people are finding out that not only are there safety issues with vaccines, but efficacy issues as well. A recent outbreak of mumps among teenagers in New York and New Jersey involved kids who were vaccinated. Adults who experienced an outbreak of mumps in Iowa a few years ago had all been vaccinated too. The risks associated with getting vaccines need to be carefully weighed against the expected benefits, and increasing amounts of evidence suggest that the benefits may have been overstated.

The health authorities are fighting an uphill battle as more and more people are opting not to vaccinate their children, or to get annual flu shots and other recommended inoculations. As a result, I expect that attacks on health professionals who support the rights of individuals to make decisions about vaccinations based on informed choice will continue and become even more vicious in the future.

Here is another addition to the topic of breastfeeding vs. formula for feeding your baby. This is from an email newsletter I subscribe to “News You Can Use” and recommend all my readers subscribe to it. Though I provide a link to it and subscription on the right column of this page, here it is again. Subscribe to “News You Can Use” here’s a link to this article , which is one of several for this particular issue. http://www.wellnessforum.com/NewsStand/ March 29, 2010, Volume 8 Issue 13.

Dear Dr. Pam: If a woman just can’t or won’t breast feed, is soy or dairy formula better?

For the record, breastfeeding is so far superior to formula feeding of any type that other options should be considered only in rare circumstances, such as when a child is adopted or when the mother cannot produce enough milk. In fact, Dr. John McDougall has said that he thinks breastfeeding is so important that if he were appointed Surgeon General, he would allow baby formula to be available only by prescription.

I have serious concerns about cow’s milk formulas for many reasons. The nutritional makeup of cow’s milk is different than mothers’ milk. For example, the protein content of cow’s milk formula is higher, close to 17%, while mothers’ milk is approximately 6%. The risk of a child fed cow’s milk developing type 1 diabetes is higher than the risk of a smoker developing lung cancer. It is common for babies fed cow’s milk to develop chronic ear infections, gas and intestinal discomfort, vomiting, colic, diarrhea or constipation, and skin conditions like eczema.

Both cow’s milk and soy formulas contain added sugars, and many pediatricians are legitimately concerned that these added sugars set the stage for craving sweet foods, which can lead to overeating and obesity in children. Another issue for formula-fed babies, regardless of the type of formula used, is overeating. Breastfed babies nurse until they are full; the milk is not measured, but portion control is not an issue. Bottle-fed babies are encouraged to drink milk until the bottle is emptied and in many cases this is the beginning of learning how to overeat.

Keep in mind that there are no good options if an infant cannot be breastfed; parents must pick from less than optimal ones. All things considered, I am more comfortable with organic soy formulas than cow’s milk formulas, since my research has shown the risks associated with soy to be considerably less than the risks associated with cow’s milk.

___________________________________________________________

I fortunately learned of the hazards of formula for babies vs. breastfeeding before either of my children was born. However once my first, my son was born and his mom, upon returning to work after maternity leavenoticed the stress of work was causing her breast milk supply to reduce and let me know to find a good formula to start using. Well in doing so, I of course checked out all the formula in the grocery store and was appalled at the ingredients. So I checked at the health food store and although the ingredients were far better the price was very prohibitive. So after talking with others and doing a bit of research I found a book that had a recipe for a “porage” that had been used for feeding infants when there were breastfeeding issues. It was from a book on Macrobiotics which was made mostly from grains. This provided a good carbohydrate and protein blend and at the time also provided a multivitamin which at the time I believed in them not yet being aware of the “whole food” concept I know of now. At the time in fact Juice Plus+ did not yet exist which would havebeen great to use. Although both my kids did quite well with what I gave them. If you would like more information about this recipie let me know. I’ve contemplated making it available to others. The biggest drawback is the time it takes to prepare as at the time, I was a stay at home dad. I think it was worth it though:) As I said in a previous post “Breastfeeding your baby is a total no-brainer” and as Dr. Pam Popper points out here, there are rare circumstances that your baby should not or can not be breastfed.

I’ve posted on the Obama Health Care plan in the past and what we have going on now and comments being made about it really just enforces what I said previously I think. The only Real Health Care Reform requires a totally new paradigm. What I mean is the money making aspect would need a totally new approach. Using the current system of healthcare in the US, I mean the way medicine in general is practiced would need to change and that would involve a totally different mindset with the American people. I have to say they actually perpetuate the problem. They are improving but the idea of what too many Americans consider good eating and lifestyle habits is the first step. This new paradigm I refer to would mostly put the pharmaceutical companies out of business as well as the medical equipment companies, probably hospitals as well. Doctors and other medical personnel would need to be totally retrained. Nothing that could be done in one or two presidential terms.

Here is a discussion that was on the Diane Rehm Show, Thursday, March 25, 2010 on NPR. By the way NPR is my favorite news source because it is not influenced by commercial interests.

This link is to a page with a podcast of the Diane Rehm show on NPR.
http://thedianerehmshow.org/shows/2010-03-25/whats-health-care-bill
It includes the comments I refer to above.

As a person who believes in a holistic approach to good health; eating as natural as possible to include as little processing and artificial ingredients as possible, maintaining the body physically with regular exercise and feeding oneself spiritually are key to preventing disease and illness. The spirituality aspect is one I’ve come to learn and appreciate more in the last few months. In reading my blog if your just seeing it, I talk of many aspects of diet, medical procedures and other environmental issues that effect our health and give a heads up to readers who may appreciate a different perspective on information they’ve already heard or read.

I’ll likely be following up on the healthcare reform issue as I get more from my nutrition and health resources.

Thanks for reading:) Always want your feedback. Especially the raving comments:):)

Milk is promoted as being an important food for daily consumption, for getting vitamin D, Calcium, and protein. Many American children consume it as it is promoted as being good for growing bones and teeth.

In reality however, none of this is really true. Does it have calcium? Yes, but can we absorb it and if we do, why is it a problem? Does it have Vitamin D? Yes, because it is added, but what is the quality and usability of that vitamin D? Does it have protein? Yes, in abundance but does the human body require that much, and what is the problem with the excess?

I’ve added links to provide much more detail about what I’m saying here and the articles go much further into the additional problems with milk from the production to the processing once harvested from the cow. However in essence, here is the short answer to the questions posed above that contrasts the promotional hype.

Milk does have calcium however it’s absorbabilityby the human body is minimal and the high level of protein in milk flushes out minerals including calcium from the body. The net result of getting calcium form milk therefore is in the negative value.

As stated above milk certainly has protein, however there is a belief that our bodies need a lot of protein, when in fact we only need a little protein. At least for most people, as there are exceptions. However also as stated above, excessive protein, particularly in high concentration as in milk can cause problems flushing out other minerals and necessary nutrients.

Vitamin D is another concern and has been added to milk. Vitamin D is actually produced by the body when exposed to sunlight. In northern areas where exposure to sunlight is reduced Vitamin D supplementation is suggested by some.

That is some of the nutritional (or lack there of) information with regard to milk. The links below provide more details on some of these in addition to, as I said, more info the the problems with production and processing posed to our health that is in milk.

The aspects of nutrition relating to getting calcium and other minerals needed for calcium to do it’s job are not found in milk, but in fresh produce, especially broccoli and green leafy vegetables on a regular basis. With milk often being used to give children proper nutrition daily, but in fact it does not really provide that, Juice Plus+ is an easy and affordable solution.

This posting is mostly content from an Interview by Joseph Cooper, host of the show, Tropical Currents on WLRN radio in Miami Florida. I recommend you listen to the interview yourself at http://204.13.1.19:81/and select the podcast from Monday, March 15th. In this partial transcript I add some of my own comments. Though mostly I agree with and applaud what Dr. Servan-Schriberis doing to promote prevention of cancer and disease in general with Oncologists, some of his statements are in contrast to what I’ve learned from other reputable sources of which I will do follow-ups once I inquire with those sources for their feedback. I comment accordingly to those statements in this posting. Dr. David Servan-Schreiber wrote the book Anti Cancer- A New Way of life. Go to the website http://anticancerbook.com to read more about him. He is a clinical professor of neuropsychiatryat University of Pittsburgh. At 31, while doing an experiment in brain scans and a test subject did not show, he did the test on himself, to discover he had a brain tumor. He went through the conventional treatment of surgery and chemo and went into remission. However a few years later, he got it again. After repeating the round of treatments, he asked his doctors if there was anything he could do to prevent it again. They said not really, just keep getting checked, if it happens again, we’ll get it sooner for better treatment results. He was not satisfied with that answer so began doing his own research and learned what changes in his lifestyle; diet and exercise he could make to prevent a recurrence again. In his research he found the reality is you can help your body resist disease. What you eat can either slow down or prevent any disease, cancer or otherwise. In doing research, he learned that brain tumors are more common in young people. Part of the problem is that modern Oncologists do not see it as part of their job to see what patients can do to prevent of slow down recurrence. The reason we don?t all die of cancer is that although we all have cancer cells in the body, the immune system keeps it from being a problem. The point is to find the right diet that will strengthen your natural defenses.

The approach is to create a “Tumor Micro environment” to make the biological environment unpleasant for the growth/development of those cells. He says with brain cancer, you can never cancer free. Just a matter of keeping under control. He pointed out that Cancer for almost all cases is not genetic. There have been Cases of foster children getting cancer as per their foster parents. Children have the risk of adoptive parents, showing it’s lifestyle, not genetics.

The question was posed, why the increase of cancer over the last 40 years. Part the population is older, since people are living longer. Also screening for more than had been in the past. But cancer has been growing 1.5% per year in children. Other cancers like prostate and others have been increasing as well. Lifestyle changes, diet- avoid the obvious bad choices. Foods that slow down cancer growth (some are listed below), more activity, move on bike or walk instead of using a car. Stress management, pursue work that is most satisfying, or has most meaning to you. It’s been learned that stress does not cause cancer, but can help cancer grow. If you need help with your needs, call on friends or family to help out. Staying isolated is problematic.

How does one avoid quacks? Dr. Servan-Schreiber is much in favor of helping body as much as possible, however his opinion is that conventional treatment is the only proven treatment. He feels other treatments have not been proven. I will do a follow-up on this in a later blog posting but I’ve learned otherwise. He warns against anyone that tells you that conventional treatment is not proven. If they say that, beware. Those who say that if you don’t get better from their non-conventional treatment, you did not want it enough.

Make sure your diet moves away from refined sugar. Most problem sugar is from sodas, the corn syrup.

Cell phones can also be a problem. This cell phone comment relates to my previous post, we should all be conscious of this. Dr. Servan-Schreiber points out that the current research literature says there is no relationship between cell phone use and brain tumor. The problem here is the results of any studies had not taken place over a long enough period of time. Studies must be over 10 years or more. He points out that withcigarette smoking, it takes 10-20 years for any evidence of cancer to show up. He proposes the same is probably true with cell phones and that they are the “Cigarette” of the 21st century. He also proproses that 1 hour or more per day of cell phone use is considered a problem.

Here is some of his suggestions for disease prevention:

Drinking 3 cups or more a day of Green Tea for 50% reduction. Their Polyphenols kills cancer cells and prevents blood vessel growth, preventing tumor growth. Will lower blood pressure. Best to drink it outside of meals for better absorption.
Consuming Stone fruits daily.
Mind body links- don’t live long in helplessness. Use breathing techniques to reduce stress. Any Yoga breathing technique will do. Make sure to reach out to friends, do things with people you like, it’s better for your health than television.
Less cancer in Eastern than Western diet. Mushrooms are great for immune systems, especially Japanese mushrooms, consuming 2-3 times a week.

So the some of the diet biggies, Stone fruit, mushrooms and green tea.

With relation to Organic, vs. Non-organic? Recommendations are for more fruits and vegetables. No distinction of such is made. It’s less of a problem to get a little pesticides in your daily fruit and vegetable consumption than no fruits and vegetables at all. 80% vegetable is best diet. Cooking vs raw. Cooking won’t destroy most cancer fighting chemicals. Hope you find this useful.

Would love to get your comments.

A key part of leading a healthy lifestyle is to get lots of fresh raw fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. The problem is, most people do not and with children it’s worse. Cell phones and their wireless accessories expose us daily to more radiation than ever before. One way to protect is by using a wired earpiece. The best way to protect from the damage done is with fruits and vegetables.

I really hate posting this because our daily lives have become very attached to our cell phones. They provide on the go communications better than ever in history. However this could also be an argument for my friends out there who absolutely refuse to use text messaging. I am attached (dare I say hooked….na) to my cell phone as I treat it like an American Express card; I don’t leave home without it. One thing that I use my phone for which has prevented me many times form leaving it behind is texting my current location and mileage to my email. It’s a habit for me to do so as I’m leaving where I’m at. This habit is also good for having recorded when you left somewhere. I do the same when I stop for gas, creating a sort of auto-log for gas and mileage. Buy I digress from the real topic here.

Here is an article outlining the health problems that have already been reported, and I’m sure more will come along about the dangers of the radiation emitted from cell phones. http://superconducstors.blogspot.com/2009/12/cell-phone-hazards-evidence-is-in.html

And this one that focuses more on use by children. http://www.dailymail.co.uk/health/article-345465/Parents-ignoring-mobile-phone-risks.html

As many surmised long before the dangers of smoking were officially announced in the early 60’s, that smoking was not a healthy thing to be doing. That in mind, I am sure others have considered the likely health hazards related to cell phone use radiation. It mostly came to me in seeing teens outside, especailly at night, using their cell phones. It brought back memories of decades ago seeing the glow of teens cigarettes. Initially my thought was better the phones, than cigarettes. But then the thought that is was really a matter of one bad habit being replaced with a higher tech, possibly even more dangerous habit? As mentioned earlier, the habit of texting, versus talking on the phone is probably a much safer use of it? Have not seen any indications of dangers from texting, it in fact is suggested as a means to keep it from the ear, which is considered the stronger exposure to the radiation.

Here is a link to avoiding exposure.
http://www.cellphones.ca/news/post003607/
Note however I do not agree with using a bluetooth device being an effective means of limiting radiation. As this article also states. http://www.emfblues.com/Bluetooth-EMF-Safety-Health-Effects-Dangers-Bluetooth-Headsets-Dangerous-Radiation.html
Having studied electronics technology and the fact that the effects of radiation are cummlative, as the previous article states; no, or insufficient research has been conducted on it’s safety. Given that many keep the bluetooth device in their ear all or most of the day, my guess would be that it’s actaully worse since the signal is being transmitted as long as the bluetooth device is turned on and worn, not just when talking on the phone.

Here are a couple more reference links.
http://ezinearticles.com/?Are-Cell-Phones-and-Bluetooth-Headsets-Safe?&id=2237979

A key part of leading a healthy lifestyle is to get lots of fresh raw fruits and vegetables in your daily diet. The problem is, most people do not and wiht children it’s worse. Cell phones and their wireless accessories expose us daily to more radiation than ever before. The best way to protect from the damage done is with fruits and vegetables.
This article really covers all cancers in general. But focuses on one woman’s experience with repeated unnecessary Mammograms. ”If I had known then what I know now, I would have asked her why doctors place so little effort or educational emphasis on real food and healthy diets, and about Thermography. By the year 2007, I was learning even more about diet and lifestyle as it related to cancer and health. I also learned about an exciting procedure -FDA approved and has been used in Europe for decades – thermography. It is less expensive than mammograms, and can detect cancer up to 10 years before a mammogram.”

This artice explains the advantages of a Thermography rather than a Mammogram for “Preventing” breast cancer.

I’ve made a number of posts on Mammograms and Breast Cancer and will continue to provide important updates from reliable sources to share. This is from Dr. Pam Popper’s Newsletter. I’ve got her as a resource here at the right column, referred to as “The Wellness Forum“. Dr. Pam Popper is a great resource for very credible nutrition and health information in that she has a very scientific approach and is also quite blunt going by the research results of any topic she comments on. She is big on pointing out erronious information being distrubited to the public she is an awesome resource to check with when you are contemplting making changes in your lifestyle or going for a medical procedure or test.

She has her two latest Newsletters on this topic and clarifies the controvice that has been in the news on this.

Go Here for this info:
Wellness Forum Newsstand and see the last two issues (47) in two parts.

Here are a couple excerpts that I found particularly interesting:

“If breast and prostate cancer screening really worked, the researchers correctly noted, they should have resulted in incurable cancers being found early and treated when they could be cured. A large increase in the detection of early-stage cancers should have been accompanied by a decline in late-stage cancers. But this did not happen.”

“Dr. Otis Brawley, chief medical officer for the American Cancer Society told the New York Times in response to the earlier JAMA study that the organization would post a message on its website next year saying that screening for breast, prostate and certain other cancers results in the over-treatment of non-aggressive cancers while often missing more aggressive deadly cancers.”

“We don’t want people to panic,” he said, “But I’m admitting that American medicine has over-promised when it comes to screening. The advantages to screening have been exaggerated.”

One thing that is not stated in this issue is that there is an alternative for screening in a test called Thermography.I’ve referred to it in previous postings I’ve done, but here is a podcast with Dr. Popper and a Clinical Thermographer, Theresa Spires, owner of Functional Imaging, about the technology and how it works, along with applications other than breast imaging, discussing it’s benefits and differences from Mammography. When going to this link scroll down to the “Breast Thermography” podcast and click t listen to that.Very informative.

If you are in the South Florida area, you can call or visit Florida Natural Healthcare Center, one of their services is Thermography http://floridanaturalhealthcare.com/thermography.html
Call them and let them know I referred you.

This is a follow-up to my previous post on new information from the U.S. Preventive Services Task Force.

Many sources, mostly western medicine sources keep sticking to the claim that family history (Genes) and old age are the biggest risk factor in spite of the fact that the actual evidence says otherwise. That Lifestyle; good nutrition and exercise have more of an impact on getting ANY disease. Meaning articles like this have it backwards http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/33080081/ns/health-cancer/ns/health-cancer/ when studies studying cultures around the world have found when women of a certain culture have western changes in their diet, their risk of breast cancer increases dramatically.
http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/city/varanasi/Urban-lifestyle-major-cause-of-breast-cancer/articleshow/5233475.cms

One source that well documents the relationship between Diet and disease is the book “The China Study”. See exerpts here: http://www.thechinastudy.com/PDFs/ChinaStudy_Excerpt.pdf

In the Video at this link http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/34040273/ns/health-cancer/ the concern is regarding the number of cancers found compared to the number tested. The problem is women are more willing to get tested in the effort to be made aware sooner rather than later if there is a cancerous condition when the more important issue is using testing that can detect if the conditions exist where a cancer may develop such as thermography as per one of my previous posts on that testing procedure.

Hi all,

One of the resources I recommend to the readers of my blog is the Wellness Forum run by Dr. Pam Popper, a nutionist and great information on nutrition and getting a better understanding of medical tests and treatments, thier pros and cons that your doctor is maybe not aware of.

Here is a link to her latest newsletter.
http://www.wellnessforum.com/NewsStand/

If you haven’t subscribed I recommend going here http://www.wellnessforum.com/Forms/SubscribeNewsletterForm and doing so.

Dr. Pam Popper often speaks locally about health and Juice Plus+ which she often incorporates in the nutritional excellence for her clients.
No other nutritional product has been proven clinically to boost the immune system other than Juice Plus+, other than fruits and vegetables which is what Juice Plus+ is made of.
Contact me rick@rickfigley.com or 954-649-5896 to learn more or visit my Juice Plus+ website www.rickshowsjuiceplus.com
