Dr. Servan-Schreiber: Anti Cancer- A New Way of life.
This posting is mostly content from an Interview by Joseph Cooper, host of the show, Tropical Currents on WLRN radio in Miami Florida. Though mostly I agree with and applaud what Dr. Servan-Schriberis doing to promote prevention of cancer and disease in general with Oncologists, some of his statements are in contrast to what I’ve learned from other reputable sources of which I will do follow-ups once I inquire with those sources for their feedback. I comment accordingly to those statements in this posting. Dr. David Servan-Schreiber wrote the book Anti Cancer- A New Way of life. Go to the website http://anticancerbook.com to read more about him. He is a clinical professor of neuropsychiatryat University of Pittsburgh. At 31, while doing an experiment in brain scans and a test subject did not show, he did the test on himself, to discover he had a brain tumor. He went through the conventional treatment of surgery and chemo and went into remission. However a few years later, he got it again. After repeating the round of treatments, he asked his doctors if there was anything he could do to prevent it again. They said not really, just keep getting checked, if it happens again, we’ll get it sooner for better treatment results. He was not satisfied with that answer so began doing his own research and learned what changes in his lifestyle; diet and exercise he could make to prevent a recurrence again. In his research he found the reality is you can help your body resist disease. What you eat can either slow down or prevent any disease, cancer or otherwise. In doing research, he learned that brain tumors are more common in young people. Part of the problem is that modern Oncologists do not see it as part of their job to see what patients can do to prevent of slow down recurrence. The reason we don?t all die of cancer is that although we all have cancer cells in the body, the immune system keeps it from being a problem. The point is to find the right diet that will strengthen your natural defenses.
The approach is to create a “Tumor Micro environment” to make the biological environment unpleasant for the growth/development of those cells. He says with brain cancer, you can never cancer free. Just a matter of keeping under control. He pointed out that Cancer for almost all cases is not genetic. There have been Cases of foster children getting cancer as per their foster parents. Children have the risk of adoptive parents, showing it’s lifestyle, not genetics.
The question was posed, why the increase of cancer over the last 40 years. Part the population is older, since people are living longer. Also screening for more than had been in the past. But cancer has been growing 1.5% per year in children. Other cancers like prostate and others have been increasing as well. Lifestyle changes, diet- avoid the obvious bad choices. Foods that slow down cancer growth (some are listed below), more activity, move on bike or walk instead of using a car. Stress management, pursue work that is most satisfying, or has most meaning to you. It’s been learned that stress does not cause cancer, but can help cancer grow. If you need help with your needs, call on friends or family to help out. Staying isolated is problematic.
How does one avoid quacks? Dr. Servan-Schreiber is much in favor of helping body as much as possible, however his opinion is that conventional treatment is the only proven treatment. He feels other treatments have not been proven. I will do a follow-up on this in a later blog posting but I’ve learned otherwise. He warns against anyone that tells you that conventional treatment is not proven. If they say that, beware. Those who say that if you don’t get better from their non-conventional treatment, you did not want it enough.
Make sure your diet moves away from refined sugar. Most problem sugar is from sodas, the corn syrup.
Cell phones can also be a problem. This cell phone comment relates to my previous post, we should all be conscious of this. Dr. Servan-Schreiber points out that the current research literature says there is no relationship between cell phone use and brain tumor. The problem here is the results of any studies had not taken place over a long enough period of time. Studies must be over 10 years or more. He points out that withcigarette smoking, it takes 10-20 years for any evidence of cancer to show up. He proposes the same is probably true with cell phones and that they are the “Cigarette” of the 21st century. He also proproses that 1 hour or more per day of cell phone use is considered a problem.
Here is some of his suggestions for disease prevention:
Drinking 3 cups or more a day of Green Tea for 50% reduction. Their Polyphenols kills cancer cells and prevents blood vessel growth, preventing tumor growth. Will lower blood pressure. Best to drink it outside of meals for better absorption.
Consuming Stone fruits daily.
Mind body links- don’t live long in helplessness. Use breathing techniques to reduce stress. Any Yoga breathing technique will do. Make sure to reach out to friends, do things with people you like, it’s better for your health than television.
Less cancer in Eastern than Western diet. Mushrooms are great for immune systems, especially Japanese mushrooms, consuming 2-3 times a week.
So the some of the diet biggies, Stone fruit, mushrooms and green tea.
With relation to Organic, vs. Non-organic? Recommendations are for more fruits and vegetables. No distinction of such is made. It’s less of a problem to get a little pesticides in your daily fruit and vegetable consumption than no fruits and vegetables at all. 80% vegetable is best diet. Cooking vs raw. Cooking won’t destroy most cancer fighting chemicals. Hope you find this useful.

Pediatrition Exposes Vaccination Myths
This article is very important for every parent to read. Not only does this pediatrition point out the issues with vaccinations and the research, or lack thereof regarding adequate testing of vaccines but their effectiveness and unknown risks. Trick or Treating and Nutrition, Oxymoron?
Hey moms out there. Well tonight is the time for your little ones, or perhaps not so little ones anymore? (won’t say how old mine are and can’t get it out of their systems….a bit embarrassing:(….) In any case,we all know that candy is by no means healthy food but they sure will have fun collecting it tonight. Some call it begging, but I won’t go there, and they’re really not begging since it’s being handed to them with just a couple words after knocking on the neighbor’s door.
Anyway, the important thing is of course to handle what they do collect with discretion and some sanity. Yes, I know, that’s no fun. Especially for them, but better for you too since who wants to deal with hyper kids after they’ve gorged on all that sugar, especially since they’ll probably be out later this year, not being a school night and then gobbling up a lot of it right after?? YIKES.
Something to be aware that many aren’t though is that sugar, especially from candy will greatly reduce, and possibly even shut down the immune system for several hours. A study showed that a candy bar (regular size, not Halloween candy size) and a can of soda will shut down the immune for up to 6 hrs. Although like I said, that’s a regular sized bar, with Halloween candy being small, they will probably eat more than one and end up eating much more in volume than a regular sized bar. Have you everr noticed that they often get sick soon after Halloween? Or perhaps since the weather is usually getting cooler at this point, any illness was attributed to that. Well actually of course it;s both, with weather changing the body has to adjust, but if the immune system has been conpromised from excessive candy intake. That won’t help. One thing that will help some is drinking lots of water. If you can get them to do that, which can help fill them up with something more useful than the sugar.
If you’re in the habit of going through all the candy that has been collected, that would be a good first step. Having them keep only the stuff they really like and discard the rest. Why bother eating it just because you have it if you really don’t enjoy it that much. Why eat the added sugar? Also avoiding eating too much at a time. Just having a few pieces every day. If you can get them to make it last till Thanksgiving, their pancreases would be very happy.

Mammogram and Prevention Health Care

The administration’s health care reform talks of prevention health care. In the same sentence it also talks of using early detection screening processes as a part of that scenario. This makes it confusing because prevention and early detection are NOT the same thing. The real purpose of early detection is to get you to start spending money on treatment, drugs, radiation or surgery early thus beginning their cash flow process. The late Dr. Robert Mendelson wrote in his book “Confessions of a Medical Heretic” and published in his newsletter some 22 years ago that mammograms actually succumbed each breast to the same amount of radiation in one screening, that the entire body gets exposed to in a year. The conclusion? Not only are mammograms questionable but have a good chance of increasing your risk of the disease you’re there to be alerted to. Though I was informed a few years ago by a radiation oncologist that the radiation used now is much less, this article reveals that the danger is still there. Also note that near the end of this article it mentions Thermography. “Breast thermography which is FDA approved as an adjunct to mammograms can tell years before an actual tumor forms that there are problems in the breast.”

Swine Flu (H1N1) Prevention Update

What do you recommend people REALLY do to protect their health against Swine Flu (other than receiving a scary vaccine)?
Please address this whole ‘Swine Flu’ (H1N1) epidemic that’s supposedly coming, and what you recommend people REALLY do to protect their health (other than receiving a scary vaccine).
Answer provided by Dr. Jennifer Daniels: The virus is the seed. Its growth and progress is determined by the soil that it’s “planted in.” The soil would be the conditions in your body.
Let’s talk about the epidemic part first. An epidemic is defined as a rapid spread or increase in the occurrence of a disease. We know that getting a disease has 2 components: exposure and susceptibility.
Exposure
Person-to-person contact could not spread a disease as fast as the Swine Flu is predicted to spread. An outbreak of this magnitude would require a common source exposure. This means that the food supply, water, air, or something that large numbers of people are exposed to at the same time would have to be the source of exposure to the virus.
The one obvious source of exposure to the virus is the vaccine, which we know is manufactured from the virus. This source of exposure is easily avoided. Do not get vaccinated.
The next source of Swine Flu is swine (or pork). Do not eat it.
The next source of viral exposure is tap water. Drink reverse osmosis water or distilled water.
Dairy products can make it difficult for the body to resist respiratory infections. Eliminate dairy from your diet.
This will address the exposure part. Person-to-person contact is not, and has never been, a factor in sweeping epidemics. So secluding yourself, getting the vaccine, drinking tap water, and sending out for pizza with sausage and extra cheese only increases your chances of exposure.
Susceptibility
Once you have handled the exposure part, you need to address your internal environment. In the event that you are exposed, you need to be sure that you have an internal environment in your body that will not allow the virus to grow.
In order to flourish, the virus needs sugar, an immune system burdened by other organisms, malnutrition, not enough oxygen, or dehydration.
Eat a diet that has no sugar, eat a nutritious diet (meaning a whole-food, plant based diet), avoid foods that have lots of bacteria (mainly meat and dairy), take deep breaths, and do enemas daily during the period that you feel exposure is likely.
Take your Juice Plus regularly, including the Vineyard blend – a properly functioning immune system and cardiovascular system are up to the task of creating antibodies and efficiently fighting off infections, otherwise we would not have made it as a species on this planet. The immune system has something called plasticity – it means that if the immune system has the nutritional support it needs and good hydration, it can make antibodies to a virus it has never seen before, and it can do it in a matter of hours. I cannot say the same for the most sophisticated immunological laboratory on the planet.
If Infected:
If you feel you have been exposed or that the virus may be in your system, eat raw garlic, radish, and vinegar (see recipe below). This will stimulate the immune system and act as an antibiotic. Continue the dietary measures discussed above.
Dr. Daniels’ Immune Boost Recipe
1 head of garlic, crushed or minced
3 red radishes or 1 turnip grated
1/2 cup apple cider vinegar, organic unfiltered if possible, but regular is ok
Put all ingredients in a glass jar. Shake. Let sit for 30 minutes. Take 1 tablespoon (vinegar and solid stuff combined) by mouth 3 times a day until all better. It is ok to double or triple the recipe.
That is really about it. I would strongly recommend the avoidance steps. They are the most effective and the easiest.
The Good News
Remember, it is just a virus. Like every other virus, the infection rate may be high but the death rate is low and most people experience the flu, even this one, as a few days of inconvenience. Do not rush to do things that may be more harmful than doing nothing.

Healthy Sleep, and healthy sleep habits
Very interesting info here from Dr. Mercola. I knew sleep is very important and adequate amounts of it as well. But did not realize the importance of getting your sleep while it’s dark and to avoid sleeping in during daylight. One should sleep in total darkness and sleep as many hours before midnight as possible and up by sunrise.
I had sometimessacrificed sleep for exercise time, but learned later what a bad idea that really is. Exercise is important, but not a the expense of sleep since sleep is when most of the body repairs take pace. Some of those repairs are a result of exercise. An ironic part of posting this now is as you’ll see and hear. I should already be in bed:):) Watch and learn. I sure did.
Breastfeeding your baby is a total no-brainer
Came across this video on YouTube, done by “Nutrition by Natalie” regarding the benefits of breastfeeding both for baby and mom.
First let me say, go to this video and subscribe to her videos. If you’re not already on YouTube, go ahead and start an account. You don’t need to upload videos. If you’re serious about learning more about good non-BS nutrition, subscribing to her stuff is worth the subscription alone. I love her stuff, she’s so on target with everything she says. She looks young and she is, but she got started at a very young age, which I can relate to but she’s very impressive.
She makes some awesome points as to why it’s really EXTREMELY important to breastfeed your baby. Not only because of the benefits to baby but to mom as well. In this blog I try to enlighten the readers why nutrition is not only important to good health, but is a part of the balance of nature. If we eat in harmony with what the earth provides for us, then not only are we rewarded with better health but it’s also healthy for the earth. The fact is artificial food is not only bad for us, it creates toxic by-products that pollutes the earth. There is just no advantage in any regard to artificial food. With love to get any feedback on this if you’re not sure about artificial vs. REAL food.
Back to Natalie’s video on breastfeeding. Watch both Part 1, which focuses on breastfeeding benefits of your baby. To summarize, there is no better way to give your baby the proper nutrition for optimum growing and mature development. Commercial formula doesn’t even come close
And Part 2, the benefits to you the mom. Not Only is it the least expensive way to for you and healthiest for your baby. It provides you with health benefits re: disease prevention and body preservation protection as you age. There are just so many physiological benefits that go beyond just feeding your baby that you may be surprised about.

This article had an element that I found pathetic. Sorry but a mom who’s too busy with her work to bother to breastfeed, I feel is either ill informed which is very possible, or just plain selfish. I don’t blame her husband for being pissed with her. If that’s her attitude about the nutrition for her baby, what happens whenhe or she gets older? Scary.
There was another statement “If DOCTORS are so badly educated about breastfeeding, how do we expect all moms to be better educated than they are? It is such a shame.”
Let me tell you something about doctors. I feel bad for them because most went through many years of grueling medical school because they wanted to help people. Yes there are some who did it for the money, the truth is. Many or even most are very much behind on the info that’s readily available to help their patients. I personally know of patients who did their own research and presented it to their doctors and the doctor, assuming he or she isn’t on an ego trip (many unfortunately are, I know some on both sides of this) was grateful for the patient’s research. The fact is, as an expectant or current mom of an infant. Do the research, with he Internet, it’s NEVER been easier to find valid credible information. Be careful about info though that is provided by a company selling what you’re researching. I know what sounds obvious… but.

One of the reasons women start to breastfeed but can not continue due to having to go back to work, because the stress of work causes the supply to dwindle. I know this is valid from personal experience when my kids mom breastfed both of them. My son is 21 and when I checked all the commercial formulas available in the supermarket, I found them all substandard. They were and are mostly water and sugar. The formula like many of the foods we buy, is “fortified” with “nutrients”. Those nutrients are all synthetic.
After being disgusted by what I saw at the supermarket I went to the health food store. Those ingredients were far better but EXPENSIVE!! There had to be a better approach. There was. I found a recipe on how to make infant formula from organic whole grains. SO that’s what I did. Granted it wasn’t as good as mother’s milk, but FAR better than commercial formula. Now I saw an article a while back advising against making home made formula, but it didn’t give enough specifics as to why, other than it wouldn’t be effectively tested for proper nutrients. Well I can tell you that both my 21 year old son and 17 year old daughter did quite well with it. They both had about 3 months of breast feeding with about a month of combined mothers milk and my home made formula, then continued with just the formula. The pediatrician was surprised that neither of them almost ever got sick and had no ear infections. They both showed good growing patterns as well so they seemed to have done well. As I say compared to kids I knew on the the commercial formula. No comparison. Though this was a good stop gap, there are ways to prevent having to go through the hassle I did.
Would love any feedback on this since in my opinion, the best health care we can all have is self guided. Most medical practices are unnecessary and are profit driven, not health and certainly not prevention driven. Though I already talked about that on a previous blog regarding the health-care reform:)

Do Prenatal Vitamins Do More Harm Than Good?
Love this article. Since learning about the importance of whole food nutrition vs. taking vitamins and how especially important it it for pregnant women. This article points out the fallacy of this nutritional approach, especially for women. With this in mind I do not agree about the exceptions regarding Folic acid and other “exception supplements” because again, with whole food being the idea nutritional source, nature does not provide any nutrition in pill form. Prevent or Cure Type 1 Diabetes?
